Hello there, my name is Doug, and I am pleased to welcome you to the INF650 Introduction to Human-Computer Interaction Usability Test. How are you doing today?

I would like to thank you for your participation in this study. I know that your time is very valuable and hopefully you will enjoy our time together today.

We are going to be conducting a usability test for the Fort Hays State University website. We will be spending some time together to get your impression of this website. Remember this is a testing of the Fort Hays website and not you.

We will be asking you to complete a series of tasks that match goals typical to users like yourself when using this website. We will be interested in knowing how you do things, where you look, things like that. More than what you are doing, though, we are interested in knowing what you are thinking and how you react to the website.

One important thing we need you to keep in mind while you are testing is that we need you to think out loud. You know when you are using something, and you may get frustrated or confused, and you think in your head, “Why is this so hard?” “What am I looking for?” “I think this is what I need to do.” We want you to do the same thing, but instead of just thinking it, we want you to say it out loud.

It may seem bizarre, but you will get used to it quickly. This really helps us understand what is going through your mind while you are using the website. If you like something, we want to know that. If you get frustrated or are confused, we want to know that as well. We don’t know anything you are not willing to tell us, so please speak up and say what’s on your mind. I want to let you know there are no wrong answers in this study. We are looking for your genuine impressions.

Before we proceed with testing, we do have a few forms we need you to fill out. The first one is a video release form. Please read it thoroughly, and then sign at the bottom if you agree.

The second form is a pretest questionnaire. We are just trying to get your input, know what your expectations are, your previous experiences, etc. I will read the questions to you, and please just answer honestly.

Now I am going to give you a number of tasks to complete. Each task has a specific goal and you are encouraged to explore the website and complete each task. Just try to complete the tasks in a way that would make the most sense to you.

Now before we get started do you have any questions or concerns?

Ok then let us begin:
  1. You want to see what programs are available for your particular field of interest.
  2. You are looking to see what the cost is for attending Fort Hays virtually.
  3. After you find your Major are you able to find Minors as well?
  4. Try to apply for financial assistance.
  5. You are now looking to apply to college. Go through most of the steps until it comes time to actually sign up, and then stop. Unless you actually want to sign up for Fort Hays, then by all means go ahead.
  6. What is your overall impression of the website design?
  7. Was navigating this site easy or hard for you to do?
  8. Are there any ways that could be better accessed while you were completing these tasks.
